The two's meeting is a continuation of the train of visits of senior American officials to demonstrate support for the war-torn country • Report: Dozens managed to evacuate the steel plant in the besieged city of Mariupol

The train of Western officials visiting Kiev continues:

This morning (Sunday), the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Democratic Party member Nancy Pelosi arrived in a battle-torn country, which has suffered heavy bombings and thousands of casualties in recent months. Faced with the Russian spread, this after nearly 70 years of hostility in one intensity or another between the two powers.

"We are visiting you here to thank you for your struggle for freedom," Pelosi stressed at the reception at Zalanski's official residence.

"Your struggle is for everyone. Our commitment is to be there for you until this struggle is over," she added.

In an official statement after the meeting, the Speaker of the House of Representatives summed up the visit: "Our delegation traveled to Kiev to send an unequivocal and resonant message to the whole world: America stands firmly by Ukraine's side."

As you may recall, about a week ago, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Defense Minister Lloyd Austin also met with Zelsky in the Ukrainian capital.

In a show of support, the two promised to continue to provide Ukraine with advanced weapons, along with the continuation of sanctions policy and the isolation of Moscow.

The West, led by the United States, has imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia's economy after President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of its eastern neighbor on February 24 this year.

Meanwhile, the main challenge in Russia's current plan continues to be in southern Ukraine and the Donbas region in the east of the country.

In the port city of Mariupol, where thousands of civilians are still besieged and suffering from a severe humanitarian crisis, it was reported this morning that dozens have managed to evacuate the Azobestal steel plant, which in recent weeks serves as a shelter for local residents and houses about 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers.

According to figures from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the Russian army has so far suffered casualties of some 23,500 soldiers, 1,026 tanks, 190 fighter jets and 155 helicopters.
